A farm with a story

Hulstlo 3 is steeped in history. Once, this land was home to a small but thriving farm run by Bertha and Oscar, together with their daughters, Rosa and Lucy. In those days, there were no tractors—only a sturdy Brabant draught horse to plow the fields. The twelve cows were milked by hand, a labor-intensive but loving tradition.

Hulstlo 3 breathes history. Here, Bertha and Oscar, together with their daughters Rosa and Lucy, once ran a small but thriving farm. In those days, there were no tractors; a Brabant draught horse was the power source for tilling the fields. The cows - 12 in total - were milked by hand, a labour-intensive but loving process.

Though the original farmhouse is no longer in use, the restored granary and stables are still inhabited. Today, the rich history of Bertha and Oscar lives on through three tiny houses lovingly named after them—Bertha, Lucy, and Rosa—preserving their legacy in a truly unique way.

Orchard with geese and sheep

The natural charm of Hulstlo 3 has not only been preserved but carefully enriched. In collaboration with a social economy initiative, a stunning fruit orchard was planted, featuring both large and small-stemmed trees. At the heart of the orchard lies a wadi, a natural buffer that collects rainwater and enhances biodiversity. In the summertime, the orchard comes to life with sheep, barnyard geese, chickens, and a gentle donkey, creating a cozy and authentic countryside experience.

The historic hedge of beech and hawthorn has been replanted, forming a natural border around the property alongside a stork nesting pole. In summer, a colorful wildflower meadow transforms the landscape into a paradise for bees, butterflies, and nature lovers. This is a place where serenity, beauty, and a deep respect for nature come together.

Lippensgoed-Bulskampveld Nature Park

Just a stone’s throw from Hulstlo 3, you’ll find Lippensgoed-Bulskampveld Nature Park, one of the largest green areas in Flanders. Spanning 540 hectares, this vast natural reserve is a true paradise for hikers, bird watchers, mountain bikers, and cyclists. Its winding paths, expansive forests, and rich biodiversity offer a unique opportunity to experience nature at its finest. Whether you seek adventure or simply want to enjoy the peace and quiet, Bulskampveld is an absolute must during your stay.

Mystery and history near the tiny houses

A short walk from Hulstlo 3 stands the renovated Kasteel de Madrid, a site with a fascinating and mysterious past. This castle played a role in the infamous "Murders of Beernem," a series of eerie events in the early 20th century, including the tragic murder of young Baron Albert de Visscher in 1915. Though the castle is privately owned and not open to visitors, its dark history adds an intriguing dimension to your stay.

Modern tiny houses with a nostalgic nod

The three tiny houses—Bertha, Lucy, and Rosa—are designed with meticulous attention to detail, honoring the history of the land while providing modern comfort. Each cottage blends warm, rural charm with contemporary convenience, featuring a cozy sitting area, a compact kitchen, and a snug sleeping space. Step outside to unwind and take in the scenic views of the orchard, the wadi, and the picturesque Hulstlo landscape.

Hulstlo 3 is more than just a retreat—it is a place where history, nature, and family intertwine. Rik and Marie, the grandchildren of Bertha and Oscar, have lovingly breathed new life into the estate by creating these special tiny houses. With care and dedication, they maintain Hulstlo 3, sharing their family’s story with every guest. Thanks to their efforts, this extraordinary location has become a destination where you don’t just stay the night—you experience a piece of history.
